Volunteering at BLS
BLS operates an active volunteering programme and recruits volunteers who are able to come into the office for one or two days a week on a regular basis for a minimum of 6 months. These are either "legal" volunteers or "administrative" volunteers, and both provide invaluable assistance in enabling the staff to take on more work than they would otherwise be able to do.
With many demands on their time dealing with casework and representation, BLS staff find the assistance of volunteers to deal with the mountains of paperwork which is an inevitable part of the law, including running cases themselves under supervision. BLS volunteers help with file management and administration, cover reception, undertake research, draft client statements, provide interpreting skills and generally lighten the load for the paid staff while gaining useful insight into legal practice in the not-for-profit sector for those planning a career in the law.
They each have their own particular interest in working in the law or for a local charity, and their contribution to the work of BLS has been considerable, while the work experience has also been beneficial for their career development and helped many of them gain paid employment.
